HOW 9 / 11 POPULARIZED THE HUNTINGTON THESIS

Earlier we pointed to the events of 9 / 11 having a lingering effect on the contemporary level of anxiety about terrorism. Canadians also acknowledge that 9 / 11 has significantly modified views on relations between religious groups in Canada, as seen in Chart 53. Francophone Canadians are the most likely to admit such an impact, while Canadian Muslims are least likely to feel that their views on such relations have been altered as a consequence of 9 / 11.

CHART 53 : EXTENT TO WHICH CANADIANS AGREE THAT THE EVENTS OF SEPTEMBER 11, 2001, HAVE CHANGED THEIR VIEW OF RELATIONS BETWEEN RELIGIOUS GROUPS IN CANADA

Source : ACS-Leger Marketing, January 2014

An illustration of how Canadians, who describe themselves as particularly marked by the events of 9 / 11, view Muslims is offered in Table 5. We can see considerable differences between those whose views have purportedly been most affected and those least so on the clash of civilizations, around the perceived threat of non-Christian immigrants, with regard to concerns over relations between Muslims and non-Muslims, and in terms of negative views and trust Muslims.

TABLE 5 : CORRELATION : VIEWS ON SELECTED ISSUES, AS SEEN BY THOSE WHO STRONGLY AGREE OR STRONGLY DISAGREE THAT EVENTS OF SEPTEMBER 11, 2001, HAVE CHANGED THEIR VIEW OF RELATIONS BETWEEN RELIGIOUS GROUPS IN CANADA

Agreement : The events of september 11, 2011 have changed my views of relations between religious groups in canada
